The Game Chef

Here at The Game Chef we know a thing or two about being creative with the countryside’s finest. Having provided around 2000 shoot lunches over the last few years, we’ve had enough practice. The company was created by Tom Godber-Ford Moore, who cut his culinary teeth cooking around the Mediterranean for clients ranging from Italian artists to the King of Spain. He has eaten and drunk his way around most of the region, and now applies all he learnt to the medium of Game.

Game Chef HQ being bang in the middle of Exmoor, there is certainly no shortage.

We work with a number of local shoots, and the National Trust, to provide us with a supply of meat that we think is the finest around. We are heavily involved in the shooting world…by which we mean that during the season nothing exists outside the shooting world…and firmly believe that one of the best ways to ensure the sustainability of our sport is to make sure that every animal shot goes into the food chain.
We think our products make this as easy (and delicious) as possible…

Boeveys Tearoom

Boeveys Tearoom
The Lyn Valley News team managed to catch up with Claire and Louise, the dynamic duo behind the newly reopened Boevey’s Tearoom, nestled in the heart of Exmoor National Park.
Their journey into the world of tearooms stemmed from a shared dream and an instant connection with the location.
“We both had the same ambition to own our own tearoom,” they said. “When we stumbled across Boevey’s, we fell in love with it.” With their shared vision, they knew they could introduce those all-important little touches that often go missing.
Choosing Simonsbath as their base wasn’t just by chance. “What is there not to love about Exmoor and its surroundings?” they enthused, clearly smitten by the lush landscape and the warmth of the community.
Boevey’s is renowned for its homemade Lemon
Drizzle cake and a range of heartwarming dishes, such as the Bacon, Brie, and Cranberry Panini, and the comforting All Day Breakfast. “Our homemade Lemon Drizzle is the most popular cake” they highlight, a testament to the care and passion baked into each slice.
The atmosphere within Boevey’s mirrors the community it serves – quaint, pretty, and incredibly welcoming. Decorated with flowered tablecloths and serving beverages in traditional china cups and teapots, the tearoom offers a slice of nostalgia with a dash of homely warmth.
A core part of their offering is the commitment to local produce, featuring Exmoor Teas, Dunster Coffee, Exmoor Ales
BOEVEYS
TEAROOM
SIMONSBATH
and Ciders, Cornish lager, and Besshill Sausages. “We use local ingredients, and this choice not only supports our community but also ensures fresh and high-quality offerings for our guests, ” they explain.
Community engagement and creating memorable experiences lie at the heart of Boevey’s ethos. From lunch on the hoof for a group of horse riders to welcoming motorcyclists for bacon baps, each story underscores the tearoom’s role as a cherished gathering spot. “Overall, the community has been incredibly welcoming and grateful that the tearoom is open
again,” they reflect, emphasising the mutual affection
between Boevey’s and its visitors.
Seasonal variations see the tearoom adapt its menu and ambiance, with offerings like quiche and soup reflecting the time of year. The upcoming addition of an ice cream freezer and a range of vegan and gluten-free cakes suggests a constant desire to innovate and
cater for all tastes.
When asked about what makes Boevey’s special, Claire and Louise point to their dedication to keeping things homemade, traditional, and welcoming for everyone. “All our menu is cooked fresh… having the bone china and loose tea keeps the tearoom traditional, ” they say, emphasising their aim to cater for all dietary requirements and go above and beyond for their customers.
As for the future, Boevey’s Tearoom is looking forward to continuing to serve the community, bringing in new and exciting developments. With their commitment to quality, hospitality, and the little touches that make a big difference, Claire and Louise have created more than just a tearoom; they’ve established a heartwarming haven for all

Exmoor Blueberries and Camping

Blueberries and Camping

The Keily family planted their thousands of blueberries back in 2006, after realising that the wild ‘wortleberries’ that used to grow in abundance on the moor, were cousins of the blueberry. The farm is at high altitude, near Dunkery Beacon, and the soil is the perfect ph level for these yummy plants. This, combined with the freshest air and purest water, makes our blueberries truly special.

As well as blueberry picking (PYO), we offer a ‘wild’ camping experience so you can enjoy our corner of the natural world including the most beautiful clear stars! Elsworthy the Hill farm Experience

Discover farm regeneration on the hills of Exmoor

Learn how a hill farm can adapt to climate change through farming practices that respect both nature and animals.

A family hill farm at the door of Exmoor National Park which started in 2005 with traditional and very friendly English Longhorns.
A great place to discover a different way of farming with animals, during your visit on Exmoor.

Elsworthy farm is an educational place to learn about regenerative farming and cattle whispering

Climate issues have taken the world by storm, but here regeneration has taken on a gentle life of its own: hedges are looking a little less geometrical, fields go back to medieval times with their funny shapes cut out of the original dense Exmoor forest.

At Elsworthy, animal welfare is at the core of our work and we have tried and developed a different way based on Rosamund Young’s idea of cattle families. The Longhorn families remain in their natural grouping. They are allowed to roam areas they chose to. Amazing things happen as a result.

North Devon Hawk Walks

Falconry on Exmoor. Affordable and fun. Various locations on and around Exmoor, North Devon and West Somerset.

A Hawk Walk is an introduction to falconry. The cost for each walk or voucher is for a group of up to four people. So if there are one, two, three or four of you the cost is the same. You will be the only people on the walk. It’s your walk and no other family or group will be with us.

You fly the bird, you are the falconer.

You will learn how to get the hawk to fly to you, how to send her away, how to feed her on your fist.

You will learn about their way of life, how they are adapted to their environment and see at first hand some of the attributes of these raptors that have fascinated us since the dawn of time.

We’re happy to bring the hawks along to private parties, schools, U3A, WI meetings etc.

Higher Roddon Farm

Luxury Rural Accommodation and Grass-fed Beef and Lamb

We have two couple’s shepherds’ huts with (what we believe to be) the best views in Somerset! We are a small working hill farm so there is plenty to see although with those views come some good hills so your thighs will see plenty of work whilst you are here! We are dog friendly although with lots of lambs and sheep around we do ask that you are respectful with your dogs and do keep an eye on the billy goat – he can sometimes be quite protective of his ladies!

Our shepherds’ huts have constant hot water, proper showers and flushing loos. The kitchen area has an electric fridge and hob. There is a wood burning stove and a very comfortable double bed – with those outstanding views over Exmoor and the Brendon hills.

We follow a grass-fed, low input, regenerative agriculture philosophy. All of our lambs are born on the farm and stay with their mothers as long as possible growing well on their mothers’ milk and our beautiful grass. All of our animals are only fed grass from the farm or hay in winter. We believe this is more sustainable, gives us a minimal carbon footprint and provides our animals with the best possible lives. Our lamb therefore is meatier and tastes fantastic with a
marbled layer of fat that adds richness to your cooking.
Available: from April
Cuts Available: Half lamb boxes, leg and
shoulder (half or whole), rack, chops and mince

Dairy Cottage, Draydon, Dulverton.

Dairy cottage is a holiday cottage set on the side of the moor above Dulverton, between the beautiful River Barle in the valley with its riverside walks and the open expanses of Winsford Hill at the top.  The permanent pasture surrounding the cottage, which is on a quiet no-through lane is home to the famous Anchor Herd of Exmoor ponies, which can also be seen on Winsford Hill.  There is a vantage point just minutes from the cottage where Red deer can almost always be seen.

Many years ago I lived and worked in the area for a while, have always loved it and was delighted to find Dairy Cottage in 2018.  We live at the other end of Somerset on the Mendip Hills so can visit frequently ourselves but also let to holiday guests.  We particularly like to welcome those who enjoy the natural world and all it has to offer.  The cottage sleeps up to 5 people but better suited to less, is dog friendly, kept clean and wi-fi is included.  For full details and over 20 photos please see our webpage with Independent Cottages –
